About The Cause
Why the worcester snoezelen?
When you have to choose a charity to raise funds for, there are so many deserving ones that it can be an impossible choice – all of whom are deserving of your support. We’ve chosen to try and help a smaller charity that is one of the unsung heroes of the county – working with more than 20,000 adults and children with disabilities each year.
So – in their own words:
The Worcester Snoezelen is a voluntary organisation providing a leisure therapy centre for people who have disabilities.
The project started out in 1993, with three main areas: the Snoezelen room for relaxation and stimulation, the soft play to assist with movement and interactive fun, and the Jacuzzi for hydrotherapy. The intention was to fill the gap in community based leisure provision for this service user group.
The concept behind ‘Snoezelen’ therapy is to promote stimulation and relaxation in a therapeutic environment at what ever level is appropriate for the individual. Our priority is simple:
‘People should have fun and enjoy themselves in whatever way they feel comfortable, without demands or the pressure to achieve.’
Within the last 16 years the project has slowly grown around the needs of the users. We now have several sensory rooms, a specialist music service, sensory garden, and creative arts service to add to the list of leisure based opportunities for people to choose from.
Around 450 people visit the centre each week, from over 4 counties, thus proving what a necessary and unique service The Worcester Snoezelen has become. We are proud of the service we offer. Children, adults, parents and carers all enjoy the centre and we feel privileged to meet such inspirational and unique people daily.
As a non profit making charity we receive no statutory funding and rely heavily on grants and donations. Assistance with our fundraising helps to enforce the importance of voluntary organisations such as ours, raise awareness and assist in launching further developments.
We are so grateful to the University of Worcester Rowing Club, Concept2 and CrownGate for undertaking this phenomenal challenge! Good Luck!
